Frequently asked questions

Straight answers for Michigan homeowners dealing with mold concerns.

Are molds a problem in Michigan homes?

Molds are usually not a problem indoors unless spores land on a wet or damp spot and begin growing. Indoors, mold growth should be avoided because molds produce allergens and can damage building materials.

Do I always need mold sampling?

In most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary. There are no EPA limits for mold spores that make a single sample a pass/fail score for a whole house.

Does Great Lakes Remediation perform mold testing?

We do not perform mold sampling due to our belief that it is a conflict of interest. We highly recommend using a third-party testing or inspection company when sampling is needed.

What is third-party testing?

Third-party testing means an independent company performs the inspection or sampling. That company focuses on testing — not selling the remediation.

How does mold get into a house?

Mold spores occur indoors and outdoors. They can enter through open doors and windows, HVAC systems, and on clothing or pets — then grow where moisture is present.

What should I do to prevent mold?

Fix leaks, improve drainage away from the foundation, ventilate bathrooms and kitchens outdoors, use dehumidifiers when needed, and address crawl space moisture. Moisture control is mold control.
